WHAT IS AIR TIGHTNESS TESTING?

All buildings unintentionally leak air, in and out. Air tightness testing identifies the amount of leakage that occurs and offers the opportunity to minimise it. The higher the air tightness level, the less unwanted infiltration will occur.

In Australian builds, unintentional air leakage is one of the leading contributors of energy inefficiency and performance gaps.

WHAT IS BLOWER DOOR TESTING?

Envelope permeability is the term given to building leakage and is measured in cubic meter (m3), per hour (h), per m2 (m2) of building envelope, or m3/h/m2. This measurement is taken at a differential pressure of 50Pa between inside and outside the building. It is tested with a blower door, which is a special type of fan designed to measure building leakage.

✓ Reduced Costs

Lower heat loss, and reduce the the energy required to heat or cool the building.

✓ Reduce Risk of Defects

Reduced risk of condensation and defects caused by mould.

✓ Improved comfort

Improve occupant comfort with better air quality and the elimination of draughts and cold zones.

✓ Smaller carbon footprint

Reduced carbon emissions through energy reduction.

✓ Certifications

NCC compliance, Green Star certification (and more Green Star points), Passivhaus certification.

✓ Building Durability

Quality reassurance, detecting issues before they become costly.

WHY DOES AIR TIGHTNESS MATTER?

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER AIR TIGHTNESS TESTING?

Commercial:

Controlled environments, such as:

  • Healthcare & hospitals

  • Laboratories

  • Goods processing

  • Clean rooms

Safety and critical infrastructure, such as:

  • Data centers and IT rooms

  • High-rise buildings

  • Chemical & nuclear

  • Mining & offshore

When energy and thermal-efficiency are a priority, common in:

  • Schools & universities

  • Government infrastructure

  • Cold storage & logistics

  • Offices

Residential:

New home builds, residential developments, and renovations targeting:

  • National Construction Code (NCC) compliance

  • Green Star certification

  • Passivhaus certification

  • High-performance outcomes
